Here is more;

What a fun and rewarding project we are launching this morning. Yesterday we had only four adoption venues going. Our one new adoption venue was quite successful for one gentleman who earned a little extra cash for his family by helping us with our homeless pets. Not only did he earn a little for himself he earned money for homeless animals that have none. He earned enough for us to get another off death row!

Today we will be at our other new venues with even more people working to give animals life, in the cities of Durham, Burlington, Greensboro, High Point, Danville, and Winston-Salem. All together, there were be about 8 folks working today. We need more!

I have always run a blue collar working man’s no kill shelter and love doing it here in NC. This template I have took the Kill rate in one town from 98% to 12% for all animals collected and ended the pet over population there, saving the city thousands annually.

Today through our non-profit, we are uplifting pets with life and people with jobs. One pet and one Job at a time.

There lurks the sugar alcohol sweetener, xylitol. It is found in the fibers of several fruits and [...]]]> Our society’s obsession with calorie counting has lead to many sugar substitutes. Unfortunately for our canine companions not all of these are safe. The most recent danger has surfaced in the most seemingly innocent of places, sugar-free gum. There lurks the sugar alcohol sweetener, xylitol. It is found in the fibers of several fruits and vegetables including berries, oats and mushrooms. Xylitol can also be extracted from corn fiber, rasberries, corn, plums and birch. It has gained in popularity as a “tooth-friendly,” non-fermentable sugar alcohol.

The ingestion of xylitol in all pets can lead to diarrhea and excess intestinal gas. In dogs, however, even small exposures can cause an increase in insulin release from the pancreas that leads to a severe drop in blood sugar. This drop is typically seen within 15-30 minutes following ingestion, but can be delayed for hours. Clinical symptoms can range from weakness and lethargy to loss of coordination and seizures. Within 9-72 hours liver failure may also be observed. Signs of liver disease can include vomiting, depression, presence of focal bruises, belly pain and seizures.

The ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center in Urbana, Illinois has seen a steady increase in the number of cases involving xylitol-containing products. Last year they managed approximately 2,690 cases of accidental xylitol ingestion. This is almost a 40 percent increase in the number of cases involving xylitol-containing products from three years ago, and 30 times as many cases from 2004, when they managed less than 100 incidents of xylitol ingestion. It is uncertain the exact amount of xylitol that is necessary to cause clinical symptoms but it has been demonstrated that as little as 2-3 pieces of gum in a small dog could be fatal. It was initially thought that only products that listed xylitol as the first ingredient were significant. Now they are finding problems developing from ingestions of products with lesser amounts of this sweetener.

If your pet has been known to ingest a xylitol-containing product, please seek veterinary assistance immediately. It is likely that they will obtain baseline labwork as well as induce vomiting. If used early on, activated charcoal may bind remaining unabsorbed xylitol. Close monitoring of blood glucose for up to 24 hours is typically required. In some cases intravenous fluid therapy with dextrose in the fluids is necessary.  Unless clinical signs associated with liver failure are observed, prognosis with appropriate therapy is generally good with no long-term side effects.
